Part 2: Characters

It has been quite a trial trying to find reference for my characters, I haven't been able to fill their sheets yet. Again, same idea: film, concept, art, illustration, anything that looked at all right.
Allot of the images I have chosen embody tiny aspects of the look I am going for, hopefully when put together on the same page they will allow me to draw what I like from each image to help my further my ideas.

Part 1: Environment

Although I have a few rough ideas of what I want everything to look like, Mood Boards and the like can be very useful for getting your ideas down on paper before you actually put pen to paper, design wise. Most of my inspiration has come from fairy tales and fables and whilst the imagery from these stories can be very powerful, the accompanying illustrations are often black and white line drawings (occasionally inked). This style doesn't appeal to me, especially as concept for a film so I have spent a good amount of time trawling libraries, book shops and the internet searching for visual inspiration.

I have gathered reference from were ever I found it: films, concept art, fine art, video games. Anything that caught my eye. These boards really help me to decide on overall themes like colour palette, style, lighting and texture. All of these are needed when deciding on the overall mood of the film.

SYNOPSIS

Follderoll is the story of two trolls and the disastrous consequences that follow their chance meeting.
Although both trolls are technically the same species, they embody entirely opposing ideas, personalities, and appearances. Big Troll is huge and rocky, not very bright but a well meaning character. His life revolves around collecting shiny objects for his vast collection. Little Troll is small and mossy, clever, but selfish and superior. She spends all of her time gardening and only cares about her plants.
The story tells of their meeting and of Big Troll's efforts to impress Little Troll, efforts that don't go down too well. Little Troll tricks Big Troll into leaving on a quest to win her affections, needless to say her plan backfires in true dramatic tradition.
In short this is a comedic tale of cruel irony.

The film consists of two characters, simple props and painted backgrounds. I want to use 3D animation in juxtaposition with an illustrative modeling style and painterly textures, hopefully creating a computer generated film that has the visual warmth of 2D animation and drawn illustrations.
I want to challenge the general preconceptions that are linked to CG animation and show that it doesn't have to be super slick and hyper realistic. That there can be a balance struck between the different media of mainstream animation.
That it is and always will be an art form with just as much room for self expression as any traditional medium.

Troll's N that...

This is a blog type entity that will narrate the development of my 4th year film and what not. I don't like blogging as a rule, but this be mandatory so I'm gonna discretely hop down off my high horse and get on with it.
Follderoll is a short film of the 3D variety, based on fables and fairy tales. It tells a slightly nihilistic tale of mutual incompatibility and misunderstanding.

In other words a Love Story, of sorts...

Enjoy.......yeh...
